About Mooncoin Vintage Club

The Mooncoin Vintage Club was formed in 2007 when two local men Ronan Walsh and Harry Dermody got together and organised a vintage tractor run to raise funded for the repair of the church roof in Mooncoin.

The date for the run was set for May 27th starting from the Royal Oak Bar. When the day arrived the lads were pleasantly surprised to find that over 70 tractors from the parish and surrounding parishes had turned up to lend their support. The tractors set off on their journey at 12.30 on a 12 mile journey around the high-roads and bi-roads of the parish stopping along the way outside the church and at Polerone quay where tea and sandwiches was provided for everybody. Eventually they all finished back where they started at the Royal Oak. The procession was led all the way by Peter Brennan on his trusty 1934 Fordson the oldest tractor on the run. There was a great turn out by local people along the route and much to everyones delight over six thousand euros was raised all going to the church roof fund. When the procession finally arrived home around 4.30 pm a barbeque was awaiting the hungry tractor drivers who all agreed that they had a great day out.

Such interest was shown in the tractor run that on the 18th July a meeting was held in The Royal Oak and Mooncoin Vintage Club was formed. The members quickly set about organizing a vintage field day for August 19th only five weeks away. Everybody banded together and pitched in with their ideas and views and a plan for the day was quickly formed. Of course being a new club there was no funds in the account so all the members donated money along with some local businesses. Fr Eamon O Gorman PP who was made Honourary President kindly donated 500 euros to the club. Everybody quickly set about completing their tasks assigned to them and as the day approached everything was falling nicely in to place.

Sadly it was not to be as tragedy struck only 3 days before the show on 16th August when Jimmy Brennan club member and father of vice-chairman Peter passed away suddenly and the show was canceled as a mark of respect.

Disheartened and saddened though everybody was with Jimmys passing we were determined to carry on and another tractor run was organized for December 30th when 63 souls braved the wind and cold once again raising money for the church fund.

The tractor run in May has now become an annual event and the clubs first vintage car run was held on June 15th.   Like the tractor run the car run was a great success with 42 cars participating in a well organized run and everybody enjoyed a great day out. The car run will also be a permanent fixture on the Mooncoin Vintage Club calendar along with the Vintage and family day in August.

The club now has 35 members and is also registered with I.V.E.T.A. New club members are always welcome so keep a close eye on the web site for future dates and we look forward to seeing you at some of our events in the future.
